A New Rewards Initiative for Australian Blood Donors

A new initiative is making donating blood not only rewarding in a personal way but also a tangible way. For the first time, blood donors are rewarded with discounts for their life saving donations by becoming a member of a growing network that recognizes their invaluable contribution.

The Australian Blood Donors Association started as unfortunately the number of blood donors across Australia is reducing very quickly but the number of people in need of these life saving blood donations continue to grow.

Peter Hawks the founder of ABDA says ‘The goal of this membership is simple. Recognize and reward blood donors and encourage more frequent and new blood donors to give blood.’

Why donating blood matters?

In Australia one blood donation can save up to three lives. These blood donations are essential for people undergoing surgery, trauma care, transfusions or cancer treatments.

Unfortunately, despite the very high demand only 3% of eligible Australians actually donate blood.

The demand for blood products continues to increase. Australia needs over 1.7million donations every year. It is critical to have a steady supply of donors to help meet this demand.

The new program aims to increase the number of donors and reduce the pressure on the system by encouraging more regular blood donations. The ABDA additionally wants to assist in raising aware of the need for blood.

How it works

Becoming an ABDA member is simple. If blood donors have given blood within the last 5 years, they are eligible to become an ABDA member and receive the benefits from our partners including Alinta Energy, Bupa and Vodafone business. For first time donors, they need to give blood through Australian Red Cross Life Blood where they will receive a donor number. Donors then visit blooddonorsassociation.org.au to register as a member to gain access to the partners links to receive the discounts. For only $33 fee members will gain significant discounts from our partners. 

A new generation of donors

For younger Australians who might not have considered donating blood before, we hope that the incentive of receiving discounts can push them to get involved. Australia has long been known for its community spirit and we hope to encourage and drive these values to help Australians in need.

Giving blood is easier than you think. There are online quizzes that take a couple of minutes to find out if you are eligible. If you are, amazing! You can head to your nearest blood donation bank and the whole process takes around an hour.
